Description:

An excellent example of Franz von Reilly’s very large and detailed late c.18th hand coloured engraved map of the Pacific showing numerous explorers routes.

The tracks of numerous explorers including; Bougainville 1768, Byron 1765, Cook 1769 (1st voyages, Cook 1777 (2nd voyage), Cook (1778), Mendana 1567-1595, Quiros 1606, Roggeveen 1721, Schoten & Le Maire 1616, Surville 1769, Tasman 1642, and Wallis 1767.

Australia is prominently named Ulimaroa, a name derived from James Cook’s accounts of his first voyage published by John Hawkesworth in 1773. The name Ulimaroa was first used on maps in 1776 by Daniel Djurberg and then by a number of other European mapmakers on their subsequent charts. Place names on the east coast of Australia are according to Cook as are those of New Zealand. The Hawiian Islands are named (Sandwich Inseln).
