Description:
Rare map showing the ‘Centre of Australia’, with distances marked on radiating circles. The centre is marked at a point to the south of Central Mt. Stuart, so named in the belief that it sat at the centre. The map list numerous explorers names and the points that they reached. It was Charles Sturt who set off, unsuccessfully on his third and final expedition in attempt to reach the geographic centre of the continent. Finally some sixteen years later it was one of Sturt’s original party, John McDowall Stuart that reached the centre. He wrote in his log "Sunday, 22 April 1860, Small Gum Creek, under Mount Stuart, Centre of Australia – today I find from my observations of the sun, 111 00′ 30", that I am now camped in the centre of Australia. I have marked a tree and planted the British flag there."
