Description:

Rare, c.19th hand coloured engraved map extending from Wellington in the west, north to Seal Rocks and south to Jervis Bay showing explorations of Charles Throsby. At lower left is a key noting the status of acreage allotted or available, also added are observations on the quality of the land.

Acknowledged is a note on the recent explorations of Charles Throsby between 1817-1819, in which he explored the country west of Sutton Forest with Hamilton Hume and accompanied by Surveyor-General James Meehan on a journey from the Cowpastures through Moss Vale to Bundanoon Creek and south-east to Jervis Bay. Throsby then reached the Shoalhaven River and Jervis Bay. In April 1819 he made a tour from the Cowpastures to Bathurst, opening up fertile country which much pleased Macquarie. In 1819 Throsby discovered a pass between the Illawarra and Robertson districts and successfully drove a herd of cattle through it.
