Description:
Scarce, c.20th colour lithographed map of Sierra Leone Protectorate by the Directorate of Colonial Surveys with a colour key at lower left.
The Sierra Leone Protectorate was a British colonial entity established in 1896 covering the interior regions of what is now Sierra Leone in West Africa. It was distinct from the Colony of Sierra Leone, which included the coastal areas (notably Freetown) that had been under British control since 1808. The Colony and Protectorate were merged into a single political unit in 1951, paving the way for independence. Sierra Leone gained full independence from Britain on 27 April 1961, with Milton Margai as the first Prime Minister.
