John Bartholomew (1890 - 1962)

John Bartholomew MC CBE FRGS FRSGS, generally known as Ian Bartholomew was a Scottish cartographer and geographer. He was the son of John George Bartholomew and Janet Macdonald, and was educated at Merchiston Castle School. Bartholomew pursued the study of cartography in Leipzig, Paris, and at the University of Edinburgh. Following the death of his father, he assumed control of the family firm, John Bartholomew and Son Ltd. He also continued his father’s work on the Times Survey Atlas of the World (1921), later developing it into the Times Mid-Century Edition, published in five volumes between 1955 and 1960. His tenure saw the introduction of innovative cartographic methods, advances in modern printing, and a substantial expansion of the company. During the First World War he served with the Gordon Highlanders and the General Staff, for which he was awarded the Military Cross in 1915 and was Mentioned in Dispatches. Bartholomew held the roles of Honorary Secretary and President of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society between 1920 and 1954, receiving the Society’s Scottish Geographical Medal in 1954. He was appointed CBE in 1960 and, in 1961, received the Patron’s Medal of the Royal Geographical Society of London.
