Description:
Scarce, detailed c.20th colour lithographed map of Trinidad with a colour reference key at left published by the controversial firm of Waterlow and Sons.
Waterlow & Sons became controversial due to their involvement in the Portuguese Bank Note Affair of 1925, where they printed 580,000 fraudulent 500-escudo notes from the Bank of Portugal’s own plates for criminal conspirators, leading to a massive counterfeit scandal. The firm knowingly printed the notes without the Bank’s authority, breaching their contract and resulting in a landmark court case where Waterlow & Sons was found liable for significant damages.
