Jodocus Hondius II (1593 - 1629)

Jodocus Hondius II was the first son of Jodocus I. Dutch cartographer, engraver, and publisher whose brief but productive career maintained and advanced the intellectual and artistic standards established by his father, Jodocus Hondius the Elder. Born in Amsterdam into one of the preeminent families of early c.17th cartography, Jodocus II grew up in the milieu of geographical scholarship, scientific inquiry, and technical craftsmanship that defined the Dutch Golden Age. Trained in his father’s workshop, he mastered the arts of engraving and mapmaking from an early age, acquiring both the precision of technique and the disciplined analytical approach essential to cartographic production. Upon the death of his father in 1612, the family enterprise passed to Jodocus II and his younger brother Henricus Hondius II. Working from Amsterdam, the brothers sought to preserve their father’s reputation while expanding the scope of his achievements. Their publishing ventures focused on revising and extending Gerardus Mercator’s Atlas, originally completed and issued by their father as the Atlas sive Cosmographicae Meditationes de Fabrica Mundi et Fabricati Figura. Jodocus II took responsibility for engraving new plates, updating geographical information, and overseeing the publication of new editions that would sustain the Hondius imprint’s commercial and scholarly standing. His work reflects a keen awareness of both scientific accuracy and aesthetic presentation, qualities that positioned the Hondius firm in competition with the great publishing house of Willem Janszoon Blaeu. Although overshadowed in longevity by his brother Henricus, Jodocus II’s contribution was foundational to the continuity of the family enterprise. His technical refinements in copperplate engraving, typographic balance, and ornamental design helped define the mature style of the Hondius-Janssonius Atlas, which would dominate European cartography through the mid-seventeenth century. Jodocus II’s early death in 1629 curtailed what promised to be a distinguished career, yet his role in maintaining the Hondius tradition was pivotal. He ensured the preservation and dissemination of the cartographic innovations that linked Mercator’s scientific precision with the visual elegance characteristic of Dutch mapmaking. His life and work thus stand as a testament to the generational continuity of one of Europe’s most influential cartographic dynasties, embodying the union of art, science, and commerce that defined the golden era of Amsterdam’s publishing culture.
