Doherty and his partner a Mr Arthur purchased the land where they had found the lithographic stone and started a venture to commercialise the deposit. Eventually it was found that the stone was unsuitable for lithographic work.
“WHAT promises to prove an important discovery was made some time ago by Mr. Docherty, while engaged on an expedition to the southern part of the province of Westland, New Zealand. Mr. Docherty observed in the bed of a creek, near Abbey Rocks.’
