Description:

Scarce, large scale c.18th map of the Peloponnese by Justus Dackerts (1635-1701), with a superb decorative title cartouche at lower left depicting the Lion of Venice defeating the Ottoman forces on behalf of Christianity.

The Danckert family were the best known print and map sellers in c.18th Amsterdam.

It is notoriously difficult to date exactly their maps. “It is very difficult to establish the year of publication as the younger Danckertses never dated their maps or atlas, title-pages”. Dr. Ir. C. Koeman, Atlanted Neerlandici, Vol. II, pp. 88-90 . Justus Dackerts and his sons obtained the privilege from the States of Holland on August 14th 1684 which they added to their maps and provides a definite timeline for maps that include this.
