Genuine antique
dated:

1817

Description:

Scarce issue of this detailed, large scale hand coloured engraved c.19th chart of Persia.

This issue has the title at lower left rather than at top right which is found later editions. Thompson’s maps are often incorrectly dated as they may show a publication date of 1814 that is not the published date of, Thompson’s New General Atlas, which was first issued in 1817. Thompson like many other map makers conitnually updated his maps and issued a number of editions after that date.

John Thomson (1804 - 1837)

Scottish cartographer, publisher and bookbinder active in Edinburgh during the early part of the 19th century. Thomson is generally one of the leading masters of the Edinburgh school of cartography which flourished from roughly 1800 to 1830. Thomson and his contemporaries (Pinkerton and Cary) redefined European cartography by abandoning typical 18th century decorative elements such as elaborate title cartouches and fantastic beasts in favour of detail and accuracy. Thomson's principle works include the Thomson's New General Atlas, published from 1817 to 1821.
