Description:
Rare c.18th historical map depicting the naval engagement between British and American forces off the coast of South Carolina during the British assault on Fort Moultrie on Sullivan’s Island. The plan highlights the fortifications at Fort Moultrie and the positions of 10 British ships, commanded by Sir Peter Parker.
Parker’s expedition aimed to provide naval support for British efforts to rally Loyalist forces in the southern colonies, particularly around Charleston. The assault, however, ended in failure on June 28, 1776. The map poignantly marks the loss of the HMS Acteon, depicted run aground in the center of the scene, and notes Parker’s injuries sustained during the battle.
