First edition of Renard’s famous c.18th hand coloured engraved world map, depicting Atlas on one knee, holding a club in his right hand and holding the world on his shoulders.

In Greek mythology, Atlas was a Titan who was condemned to hold up the heavens after losing the Titanomachy, a war against the Olympian gods. He was known for his endurance, as well as his knowledge of mathematics and astronomy.
