Description:
From the very rare large folio series of only ten views titled, "Views in the Burman Empire", drawn on the spot by Captain J.Kershaw, of the 13th Light Infantry and engraved by William Daniell R.A. "It was Daniell’s practice to only sign the engraved plates of other artists only if that artist was a personal friend." Abbey 406 The British conquest of Burma began in 1824 in response to a Burmese attempt to invade India. After two further wars, Britain had incorporated the entire country into the British Raj. Burma was administered as a province of British India until 1937 when it became a separate, self-governing colony. A view of the road near Shwesandaw Paya, the sacred Buddhist monument of Prome (Pye). Kershaw wrote: "The road seen here … generally presented an animated and interesting scene, being constantly enlivened by the peasantry, who, laden with fruit or provisions for sale, now came familiarly and gladly among the army, whose prompt payment and general kindness soon won their confidence. From this point were seen to great advantage their religious processions to the Shoe Shando Prah." References TIA II 406 Fig 28.
