Description:
Rare, lithographed prospectus for the Royal Arcade Tontine which was proposed but never built at the corner of Gresham Street and North Terrace in Adelaide.
The project was a proposed “Tontine” scheme (a collective investment arrangement) aimed at constructing a grand Royal Arcade in Adelaide. The site at the corner of North Terrace and King William Street (near Gresham Street) was instead occupied by the Gresham Hotel, which was established in 1851, rebuilt in 1873–74, and demolished in 1965.
