Description:
Rare c.19th photograph of the Blue Mountains by Nicholas Caire.
As noted on the paster label on the verso:
The present illustration is taken from the railway embankment on the Blue Mountains Line. Mount King George, the highest point in the range, is seen in the distance. The scrub in the foreground is very dense, and is the harbouring place for snakes of an immense size.
From: Caire, N. Views in New South Wales
Nicholas John Caire (1837 - 1918)
Caire arrived in Australia in 1858 & began his photographic career with Duryea, the flamboyant American photographer. Moved to Victoria 1869 & bought Chuck’s studio in the Royal Arcade in Bourke St where his trade flourished. He is best remember for his great body of work which is of real historic & artistic merit. He was always more interested in Indulging his passion for photography rather than the business side & consequently didn’t enjoy great prosperity.
