Scarce engraved view of where the Wairau Massacre (Wairau Affray) occurred on 17 June 1843 which was the first serious clash of arms between the Maori and British settlers in New Zealand after the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi and the only one to take place on the South Island.

William Hatherell (1855 - 1928)
Painter born in London and studied at the R.A. Schools 1877–9. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and Royal Watercolour Society from 1879, showing portraits, genre and illustrations. He worked for Cassell's, who sent him to Australia as one of the main artists for Picturesque Australia, as well as The Graphic and other American magazines.
