Scarce c.19th engraving showing the confrontations between the local Yalanji aboriginals, Europeans and Chinese.
As well as the Europeans seeking their fortunes, the Palmer gold fields also attracted Chinese miners who arrived by the shipload, mainly from Guangdong Province in southern China. By 1877 more than 20,000 Chinese miners had arrived and their presence increased the frequency of confrontations between the three groups.
