Description:

Large c.19th hand coloured lithographic map of the Southern Hemisphere, showing Australia with discoveries made by James Cook on the east coast. Bass Strait spelled Basses Str which was the incorrect spelling used by Aaron Arrowsmith on only the first issue of his chart documenting the discoveries made by Bass and Flinders. The chart includes the tracks of Cook’s three voyages.

George Philip (1799 - 1882)

Philip was a London geographical publisher, globe maker, and founder of the firm George Philip & Son. He started business in 1834 in Liverpool and from about 1848 he traded as "George Philip & Son" with his son and successor George Phillip II (1823-1902. Philip retired 1 July 1879 and the business was coninued by his son and nephew.
