Scarce c.19th engraving of St. Paul’s Church of England Cathedral in Melbourne.
Construction began in 1880, replacing an older parish church on the site. The building was designed by British architect William Butterfield in the Gothic Revival style, the cathedral features striking bluestone and sandstone construction. Its spire, however, was completed later in the 1930s. St. Paul’s Cathedral was consecrated in 1891 and became the seat of the Anglican Archbishop of Melbourne.

Albert Charles Cooke (1836 - 1902)
Cooke was a painter, engraver, draughtsman and illustrator. Throughout his career he worked for many of the Illustrated newspapers, such as the Illustrated Sydney News, Illustrated Australian News, The Australasian Sketcher and The Leader. He was also well known for a series of birds eye views of a number of Australian cities and towns.
