Early c.19thGerman engraving of a Kangaroo based on the first illustration originally drawn by George Stubb’s from a specimen collected at Endeavour River in 1770 by James Cook’s crew, while the Endeavour was being careened for repairs. This iconic image captured the public’s imagination for over sixty years and was the first depiction of any Australian animal in western art.

Bertuch was a successful entrepreneur and a man of the Age of Enlightenment Bertuch had been orphaned at the age of15 and lived with his uncle. He pursued an education in theology and law eventually became a publisher and the largest employer in his home town of Weimar. This image is from the first pictorial encyclopedia for children Bilderbuch fur Kinderwhich was a landmark in educational publishing.
