William Henry Broadhurst (1855 - 1927)

William Henry Broadhurst ( 1855 - 1927) Photographer born in Maitland on 13th August 1855. His family moved to Sydney when he was young and lived at Burwood. He became a surveyor's assistant and travelled with pack horses with the surveyor Arnheim to survey a great part of the south coast of New South Wales. After his marriage he resided at 51 Aft Street, Ashfield where he took up residence when only a handful of houses had been erected in the whole area. He lived in the same house all his married life. He had a family of five girls and one boy but lost his wife, son and another relative in a short space of time in 1894. Photography become his hobby and finally he was responsible for the distribution of thousands of post cards which were marketed in the area he worked, including the Illawarra coast and a line through Young, Cowra, Bathurst and Newcastle. He took numerous photographs of the south coast and travelled by train and then walked wherever he wanted to go. Many of the photographs were hand coloured for sale by his daughters, Miss Broadhurst. Broadhurst died at the age of 72 on 29th July, 1927.
