Camellia sasanqua was brought to Europe for the first time in 1820, when Captain Richard Rawes of the East Indiaman Warren Hastings brought “Camellia sasanqua to his relation, Thomas Carey Palmer, of Bromley in Kent.
Biography:
Samuel Curtis (1779 – 1860)
In 1801, Curtis succeeded the ownership of Curtis’s Botanical Magazine originally founded by William Curtis. Despite Curtis selling his rights to the magazine in 1846, the publication kept the well known name and continued to produce excellent and beautifully engraved botanical series.
