Very rare c.19th hand coloured engraved view of Cockatoo Island in 1869.
Between 1839 and 1869 Cockatoo Island was used for secondary punishment for convicts who had re-offended and between 1857-1991 was also one of Australia’ biggest shipyards. In 1869 the convicts were relocated to Darlinghurst Gaol and the prison complex became an industrial school for girls and also a reformatory.
