Description:

Scarce c.19th engraving of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Established in 1853, the MCG is located in Yarra Park, Melbourne. The engraving offers a glimpse into the early days of the ground, before it evolved into the world-class stadium it is today.

During the 19th century, the MCG played a crucial role in the development of Australian cricket, hosting both domestic matches and international test cricket from as early as 1877. The depiction in this engraving captures the venue’s early architectural features were emblematic of Melbourne’s growing status as a cultural and sporting centre. The grandstands and open fields shown here reflect the ground’s early capacity to hold enthusiastic crowds, even in its formative years.
