Early European maps of Japan were influenced by Portuguese and Dutch traders, with later refinements based on increased contact and scientific cartography. Dutch publishers such as Blaeu and Hondius helped disseminate knowledge of Japan to European audiences.
These maps reflect changing perceptions of Japan’s geography, political structure and international significance, and are prized for both historical importance and decorative engraving.
