Rare Antique Maps of Southeast Asia

Rare maps of Southeast Asia document a region central to global maritime trade from the 16th century onward. Early European cartography focused on coastal outlines, navigational routes and key ports linking the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea, often relying on limited first-hand knowledge.

Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish, French and British mapmakers all contributed to the evolving cartographic record, with publishers such as Blaeu, Hondius, Bellin and later Admiralty surveyors producing maps that gradually improved in accuracy. Many rare examples capture transitional stages of geographic understanding, colonial administration or short-lived political arrangements.

These maps are particularly prized for their rarity, association with early trade networks and colonial competition, and their often decorative engraved style. Original rare maps of Southeast Asia provide valuable insight into one of the most strategically significant regions in early modern cartography.
