Antique maps of the Philippines were shaped by Spanish exploration and administration from the 16th century onward. Early cartography emphasised coastal outlines and sea routes, reflecting the islands’ importance in trans-Pacific trade.
Later maps improved in accuracy as surveying techniques advanced. These works provide valuable insight into colonial governance, maritime commerce and the European mapping of Southeast Asia.
