Maps have long served purposes beyond general geographic description, acting as tools for science, navigation, administration and visual communication. The Map Subjects category brings together original antique maps that focus on particular themes, illustrating how cartography was used to explore and explain specialised areas of knowledge from the 16th through the 20th centuries.
This category includes a wide range of subjects, such as celestial maps charting the stars and constellations, geological maps depicting rock formations and natural resources, military maps recording campaigns and strategic terrain, and hydrographic charts produced for maritime navigation. It also encompasses town plans showing urban form and development, decorative title pages from atlases, and ocean maps that reflect the importance of sea routes and exploration.
Mapmakers and publishers including Mercator, Blaeu, Bellin, d’Anville, Arrowsmith and later Admiralty and scientific surveyors contributed to the development of subject-based cartography, combining accuracy, clarity and often striking visual design. These works reflect the scientific, political and commercial priorities of their time.
Original antique maps organised by subject offer insight into how information was structured and communicated in earlier centuries. They are valued for their specialised focus, historical significance and visual appeal, and provide collectors and researchers with a deeper understanding of the many roles cartography has played beyond general mapping.
