Melanesia

Rare Antique Maps of Melanesia

Rare maps of Melanesia reflect the gradual European understanding of the southwestern Pacific, including New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and surrounding regions. Early cartography often combined speculative geography with limited coastal sightings, resulting in distinctive and sometimes inaccurate representations.

Dutch, French and British explorers and cartographers contributed to improving knowledge of Melanesia from the 17th through the 19th centuries, with later maps benefiting from scientific surveying and naval charting. These developments transformed vague outlines into recognisable island groups and coastlines.

Collectors value rare Melanesian maps for their depiction of early exploration, transitional geographic theories and their association with Pacific navigation and imperial competition. Many examples survive only in uncommon editions or early states, enhancing their rarity and historical importance.
