Description:

Rare Hydrographic chart of the north coasts of New Guinea first issued 1899 and here updated to 1922.

Charts issued by the British Hydrographic Office were continually updated and as a consequence seafarers discarded earlier versions, making these charts, rare survivors. The Hydrographic Office first offered it’s chart for sale to the general public through a series of chart agents in 1821.

Admiral Sir William James Lloyd Wharton (1843 - 1905)

Admiral Wharton was a British admiral and was promoted to captain in 1880 and on 1 August 1884 he was appointed to the Hydrographer to the Navy a post he held for the next twenty years. in 1895 he was promoted to rear-admiral.
