This category features original antique views and prints depicting the rural and regional landscapes of Victoria, capturing areas beyond the metropolitan centre as the colony expanded through the 19th century. These early images provide a visual record of pastoral districts, goldfields settlements, country towns and natural scenery that defined much of Victoria’s historic development.
Many regional views stem from sketches made during exploration journeys, pastoral tours or as part of published series intended to document colonial progress. Artists such as S. T. Gill and others active in Australia produced lithographs and engravings that illustrate the built environment and natural features of country Victoria, including rivers, ranges, roads, bridges and homesteads.
These works are valued for the way they capture local character, depict community life and record landscapes that have since changed. As original period prints, they offer collectors and historians insight into the everyday experience of rural Victoria in its formative years.
