Description:

Very fine stipple engraving of the Copaiba which is a source of biodiesel, because of the high yield of 12,000 liters per ha. The resin is tapped from standing trees, with an individual tree yielding 40 liters per year. Copaiba has also been used in traditional medicine.

From Chaumeton, Flore Medicale, one of the most important French medicinal herbal publications of the 19th century. Rare.

Biography:

Pierre Jean François Turpin (1755-1840)

Turpin is ranked among the greatest floral illustrators of the Napoleonic Era.

In 1794 he was stationed in Haiti as a member of the French Army. Here he met botanist Pierre Antoine Poiteau (1766-1854), through whom, Turpin learned botany. Turpin would have a working relationship with Poiteau throughout his career.  Through his collaboration with Poiteau and other naturalists, Turpin created some of the finest watercolors and illustrations of plants that are known to exist.
