Early map of Asia showing the recent discoveries of Australia’s east coast and New Zealand made by James Cook on his first voyage. Curiously only part of New Caledonia is charted even though Cook discovered and charted the island in 1774 during his second voyage. Thomas Bowen was engraver to George II of England and Louis XV of France.
Thomas Bowen (1733 - 1790)
Mapmaker and print seller, son of Emanuel Bowen in Wales. Apprenticed to his father 1748. In partnership with Richard Reynolds in 1761 when they were prisoners in the King's Bench, required to make a schedule of their estate and effects as insolvent debtors. He produced numerous maps and atlases. He died in 1790 in reduced circumstances.
