Description:

Town plan of St Petersburg which includes a key indicating points of interest. The city was founded in 1703 after Peter the Great captured the Swedish fortress of Nyenskans on the Neva River in Ingria and built the Peter and Paul Fortress there. A significant building program began soon after and the architect Domenico Trezzini drew up a plan for the city in which the city would be shaped by a rectangular grid of canals with its centre located on Vasilyevsky Island, which is still evident in the layout of the streets. The city is famous for the style of its buildings known as Petrine Baroque, exemplified by such buildings as the Menshikov Palace, the Peter and Paul Cathedral and the Winter Palace.

Andrews’ superbly engraved and embellished series of town plans are
usually found issued uncoloured, this set however has FULL ORIGINAL HAND
COLOURING. We have not been able to locate another set with hand
colouring such as ours, so it’s probable that this set was either
coloured by the publisher from specific request from a purchaser, or the
purchaser had it coloured after publication. RARE
