Description:

This important and rare engraving by William Blake the English poet, painter and print maker was the first separately published view of Sydney.

All other engravings of Sydney prior to this date, were published in books and in much larger editions. It was from a drawing made by the convict artist Thomas Watling which was taken to England by the returning Governor John Hunter on 28th September 1800. Blake dedicates the engraving to Governor Hunter and features his coat of arms. Embellished with the motif of the rising sun, the engraving is a flattering and celebratory view of industry, peace and progress in the new colony. The street layout and buildings are clearly identifiable, as is the physical and social division of the settlement by the Tank Stream. On the western side are the convicts and their guards, including the barracks, stores, jail, hospital and forts. Government House dominates the landscape from the top of Bridge Street. High Street (now George Street) began as a path, probably for people carrying water from the Tank Stream to the camps in The Rocks.
