Description:
Very rare early plan of the Riverina township of Adelong, made soon after the discovery of gold at Upper Adelong in 1852 .
In 1855 Adelong was declared a gold field and 198kg of precious metals were extracted from the area. The town allotments shown are the ones reserved for the various churches, school, hospital and public buildings. The two quartz mills are shown located on either side of Adelong Creek.
In the NSW State Archives there is a manuscript map of Adelong of the same date (1858) which our map seems to be based on signed by by ‘Bennett’. Ours is of the central part of the township without the inclusion of three outer subdivisions that are in the NSW State Archives map.
