Description:

Rare woodcut map of Africa in Bunting’s typical unique style, beautifully engraved with wave like sea. Inland information is as found on most maps of the period with the exception of Bunting’s placement of a third lake, ‘Nidilis lacus’, in central Africa as a further source for the Nile. The mythical tombs of the Nubian Kings, ‘Meroe’ are shown. The mythical land of the Christian king Prester John, ‘Priester Johans Land’ is shown at where the the Blue and White Nile meet.

This is the second state with the placement of Alcayr (Modern day Cairo).

Heinrich Bunting (1545 - 1606)

Bunting was a Protestant pastor and theologian, born in Hannover, Germany, in 1545 and best known for Itinerarium Sacrae Scripturae (Travel book through Holy Scripture) first published in 1581 which contained a number woodcut maps. He studied theology at the University of Wittenberg graduating in 1569 and became a Protestant pastor in Lemgo. He was dismissed in 1575 and moved to Gronau an der Leine. In 1591 he was appointed superintendent in Goslar. When a dispute arose over his teachings in 1600 he was dismissed and retired from the ministry. He spent the rest of his life as a private citizen in Hannover.
