Important world chart by Hermann Berghaus, a German cartographer at the Geographical Institute of Justus Perthes at Gotha.
This chart is his best known work which went through at least 11 editions. He also prepared a Physikalische Wandkarte von Afrika (Physical wall map of Africa, 1881). At top right is an insert containing the Western Hemisphere showing the "cotidal lines’, an explanation of the "Lines of Steam Packet Communication, A list of the ‘Principal Ocean Steam Navigation Companies’. At top left the inset contains the Eastern Hemisphere and a key to Abbreviations used on the map. At lower left the inset is of ‘General Wind-Chart’t. To the right of the title is an inset of ‘Lines of equal Magnetic Declination Epoch 1858’.
Hermann Berghaus (1828 - 1890)
Berghaus was a German cartographer. For most of his working life he was a cartographer in the Geographical Institute of Justus Perthes at Gotha. His best known work is a chart of the world (1863) which went through at least 11 editions. He also prepared a Physikalische Wandkarte von Afrika (Physical wall map of Africa, 1881).
