Description:

Finely executed c.19th engraving, titled Barwon River, Near Fyans’ Ford, Geelong, by Albert Charles Cooke, showing the natural beauty of one of Victoria’s key waterways in the late c.19th.

The composition captures the river winding through the landscape, with Fyans’ Ford visible in the distance. Named after Captain Foster Fyans, one of the early settlers and a commissioner of Crown Lands in the district, the ford was an essential crossing point for travellers and settlers. Cooke’s attention to detail in the flora, particularly the graceful eucalyptus trees lining the riverbanks, demonstrates his keen observation of the Australian landscape.
