Description:
Very rare engraving of a colonial made cabinet of Australian perfumes submitted by the chemist E.H. O’Neil of 178 Pitt Street, Sydney for the 1866-7 Intercolonial Exhibition held in Melbourne.
Interestingly all twelve of the perfumes were based on Australian plants; Wattle, Rock Lily, Grass Tree, Native Rose, ‘Extract of Australian Flowers’, Extract of Sandalwood, native Jessamine, ‘New South Wales and Victoria United’, Myall and Frangipani Bouquet. As well one very odd one;
Australian Jockey Club. The hexagonal cabinet was made by a ‘Mr. Penman‘, from Australian timbers; Myall, Tulip Wood, Box, Satin Wood, Cypress Pine and Ti-tree.
This exhibition brought together exhibits from the Australian colonies to assist in the selection of items to be forwarded to Paris for the Exposition Universelle. The exhibition opened on 24 October 1866 and closed on 23 February 1867.
