Central America

Scare, c.19th hand coloured engraved map of Central America, from the first edition of Colton’s atlas.
There are a number of insets: Panama, the Harbor of San Juan de Nicaragua, The Nicaraguan Route, Aspinwall City and City of Panama.

This first edition is identified by the map number ’55’ at lower right. As Colton continually updated his atlases,adding extra maps he changed the map numbers as he issued later editions with more maps. Later editions have much higher map numbers for this map.

The map is surrounded by Colton’s signature, strap work scrolled border found on all of Colton’s maps.
