Description:

Easter Island’s long isolation was ended on Easter Sunday in 1722 when a Dutch explorer, Jacob Roggeveen, found the island. He named it for the holy day. The Spanish Captain, Don Felipe Gonzales, was the next to land at Easter Island. He arrived in 1770 and claimed the island for the King of Spain. But no ship from the Spanish Navy ever came to make it official. Captain James Cook, stopped briefly in 1774, and La Perouse, spent 11 hours on the island in 1786.

Mapmaker:

Edward Weller (1819-1884)

Very active English cartographer of which little is known of his
personal  life although he produced a number of important maps and was
elected a member of the Royal Geographical Society.
