This scarce engraving is from the original edition of The Illustrated London News which was established by printer and newsagent, Herbert Ingram (1811-1860). The first issue came out in 1842. It’s success was due to the fact that the stories were usually accompanied by engraved illustrations many of the colonies.

Artist:

William Heysman Overend (1851-1898)

Heysman was a marine painter and illustrator. He was born in Coatham, Yorkshire and educated at Charterhouse school. From 1872 he contributed numerous illustrations for The Illustrated London News. He was prolific and for the next thirty years, nearly every issue contained his work. He was elected to the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1886.
