Cretae seu Candiae Insula et Regnum cum Diversis Aliis Archipelagi Insulis... - Antique Map from 1680

Genuine antique
dated:

1680

Description:

Map of Crete and the Aegean Islands from the Golden Age of Dutch mapmaking. The map is adorned with an elaborate allegorical cartouche featuring Neptune, Mercury, and mer-people carrying a coat of arms. It extends as far as Ydra and Patmos and includes the Cyclades and the island of Santorini.

Mapmaker:

The Visschers were a Dutch family of mapmakers, engravers and publishers who became one of the largest firms in Holland in the seventeenth century. As none of the Visscher’s atlases were issued with printed dates, it has always been difficult to precisely date their maps.
