Description:
Fine wood cut by Lionel Lindsay of a still life with Dahlias from the edition of one hundred.
The Art Sir Lionel Lindsay, Joanna Mendelssohn;
Dahlias is a far more complex composition than the purely botanical subjects. Lindsay has balanced heavy awkward forms of the flowers against the slight curves of the other foliage. He has also used the graver with great effect to make a varied pattern of the large shapes and shadows of the background. Because of the skilful use of line in the tone of the dahlias the two white flowers outlined in black seem even more startling. In contrast with most of Lindsay’s woodcuts this has an almost Post-Impressionist feel to it as he exploits the natural gawkiness of suburban flowers to create abstract forms.
