The Cooktown Orchid (Vappodes phalaenopsis), has been the floral emblem of Queensland since 19 November 1959. It was first described in 1880 as Dendrobium phalaenopsis, then included in Dendrobium bigibbum.
Scarce lithograph from the ‘important and authoritive work for orchid growers’ (Great Flower Books p.135) by Henry Frederick Sander’s Reichenbachia, Orchids illustrated and described. Sanders titled his book after Heinrich Reichenbach who had fine orchid collection.
Henry George Moon (1857 - 1905)
Moon was an English landscape and botanical painter, noted for his orchid paintings. Although never visiting Australia, he painted several Australian plants. He provided numerous painting for botanical publications.
