The Emu had first been sighted on 21st January 1788 by surgeon Arthur Bowes, in Port Jackson and described and drawn in his diary on the transport ship Lady Penrhyn. His diary entry describes his observations ‘The animals we saw during our stay in New Holland……-a bird of a new genus, as large and high as a Ostrich’.

Biography:
Moses Griffith (1747-1819)
Water-colour painter with no formal training but in 1769 he was engaged by Thomas Pennant who in discovering his aptitude as a draughtsman employed him to illustrate his tours. He then provided a number of illustrations for Pennant’s, Genera of Birds.
