Description:

Fine lithograph of False Helleborine, from Medizinal Pflanzen, which was published in 1887 in Gera, an east-central German city south of Leipzig.

The series was described by Sitwell and Blunt;

“From the botanical standpoint the finest and most useful series of illustrations of medicinal plants.”

Veratrum album, commonly known as false helleborine, white hellebore, European white hellebore, or white veratrum is a poisonous medicinal plant.

Biography:

Carl Friedrich Schmidt (1811-1890)

Schmidt was a German botanical artist born in Berlin. He was a renowned botanical artist and lithographer who illustrated many German botanical works of the 19th century. It is thought that Alexander the Great could have been poisoned by a wine made from Veratrum albu. The properties of the plant were known by the Greeks in antiquity.
