James Watt, (1736�) Scottish inventor and mechanical engineer whose improvements to the Newcomen steam engine were fundamental to the changes brought by the Industrial Revolution. Richard Trevithick (1771�) British inventor and mining engineer. His most significant success was the high pressure steam engine as well as building the first full-scale working railway steam locomotive. John Ericsson (1803�) was a Swedish-American inventor and mechanical engineer. He is remembered for designing the steam locomotive Novelty (in partnership with engineer John Braithwaite) and the ironclad USS Monitor. Robert Fulton American Engineer and Inventor (1765-1815) is widely credited with developing the first commercially successful steamboat.Commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1800 to design the Nautilus, which was the first practical submarine in history.
