Scarce, early edition of this hand coloured c.18th engraved map showing the division among the twelve tribes and the travels of Christ through the land by Pieter Mortier.
Top left a cartouche with the title with figures of Christ healing the sick. Bottom right a person is drawing, seated on a stone. Above that both sides of a coin ‘the sickel’ [shekel].
The map extends present-day Israel, Lebanon, and Jordan, the map is richly detailed with depictions of mountains, towns, forests, and annotations marking significant Biblical sites. The embellished title cartouche at top left features an illustration of Christ healing the sick, while a separate cartouche at lower right contains a scale of miles adorned with figures of two scholars, above that is both sides of a coin ‘the sickel’ [shekel].
Pieter Mortier (1661 - 1711)
Pieter Mortier (1661–1711) Dutch c.18th mapmaker, engraver and publisher of atlases born in Leiden, the son of a political refugee from France. He travelled to Paris in 1681-1685, then returned to Amsterdam where he operated as a bookseller from 1685 until 1711. He won the privilege in 1690 of publishing maps and atlases by French publishers in Amsterdam for the Dutch market.
